Assignment #6

The goal is to create a new menu for a DVDSP project. This menu will have a mask. You will use this menu in Final Cut Pro with video later on.

1. Copy the folder 005 DVD Masks from Scarlett to your hard drive. This folder has several image files in it and a MS Word document.

2. Create a New Photoshop document, choosing the correct setup (NEW>(PRESET)DV NTSC 720X480 With guides).

3. You should bring in the Flatscene.psd file as a reference file for your design.

4. Bring in the Scene.psd, marinemammals.psd, crocodile.psd, and horned.psd images into this new file by opening up the files in Photoshop and dragging them into your new document. Name your new layers.

5. Open the MS Word doc file scene.doc and copy and paste the text into the Photoshop document.

6. Design a still menu, using the Scene.psd image as your background. Use the toolbox to play around with type and other elements. The other images marinemammals.psd, crocodile.psd, and horned.psd will be scaled down and placed behind the mask once they are finished. You can hide those layers until the final steps.

6. Add some layer styles to the type.

7. Use the selection tool to create a mask, using boxes or circles to create windows for the smaller photos.

8. Save the selection by going to Selection>Save Selection. You will need to name this selection -- call it scene mask. You will save the selection in the Channel and then edit it and load it back into the Photoshop image.

9. Edit the mask by going into the Channel and holding down the option+command keys while selecting the selection. This will let you copy the selection two times for your mask.

You will need to invert this selection though as you want the background to show up (it should be white in the Channel) and the "windows" that you've created should be hidden (be black in the Channel). Make sure all the boxes are selection (use the Magic Wand Tool) and go to Select>Inverse to have the proper part of the screen selected. You want the elements outside of those boxes selected, not the boxes themselves. Once you've selected this, the area outside of the boxes will be selected.

11. While this is still selected, you then want to go back to the Layers Palette and click on the Layer Mask button to create the layer mask. The mask will be created from your selection in the Channel. Make sure you have the background selected before you click on the Layer Mask button at the bottom of the Layers Palette.

12. If you have done the steps properly, you should see three windows that currently expose the background.

13. The next steps involved scaling down the other images and then dragging them into these windows. They will be on layers underneath the layer mask layer.

14. Click on the layer with the crocodile image. You are going to scale this down (make it 25% its current size) by using the Transform Tool.

15. Go to Edit>Transform>Scale. You should type in 25% in the options box. Make sure that you link the Width and Height so they scale at the same rate. The image should scale down to 25 percent its original size. Use the move tool to position the image.

16. Follow these steps with the Marine Mammal and Horns images.

17. You should have a document that looks similar to my final document. Save this for work on Thursday. We will flatten the image and add an overlay. Then it will be ready for Final Cut Pro.
